CAST 308 - Doing Oral History: Storytelling Between History and MemoryFC SSCI CD 4 credits How does oral history contribute to a more robust, nuanced, imaginative version of the past? How can it amplify voices and stories quieted in traditional archives? What are the field’s limitations? This course explores the field through case studies of community-engaged projects. We will think critically about and practice the methods of the field, including consent forms, archives and the archival process, transcription, and the ethical implications of interviews as a historical methodology. Students will gain an understanding of the roots and creative possibilities of oral history as a practice and the considerations necessary to undertake an oral history project. Field trip(s) required.
