This lecture course will offer students a general overview of American political parties and the transformation of American politics from the Early Republic through the present. Set amidst the backdrop of economic expansion and depression, religious movements, and foreign and domestic crises, this class will examine the forces that animated American political movements, the establishment of American political parties, and the influence of social movements on contemporary politics.

This course is appropriate for new students.
