HIST 446 - A History of Disinformation

This course offers students a survey of disinformation in United States history and how false rumors, whether intentional or not, have been weaponized in political campaigns and been contested or refuted by individuals and groups. More broadly, this class will show how disinformation, whether through the press or political pamphlets, was used as a tactic in political movements or a means of discrediting political opponents. This course will also offer a survey of American journalistic history and means by which journalists combatted disinformation in order to provide transparency.
