Oberlin takes pride in the fact that since 1896 physical education has been considered an important part of a liberal arts education. To accomplish this goal, the Department of Athletics and Physical Education at Oberlin College has a five-part structure:

  1. YeoFit and general recreation;
  2. physical activity courses;
  3. intramurals;
  4. club sports; and
  5. varsity intercollegiate sports for men and women.

Departmental Policies

  • All physical activity courses are co-curricular.
  • All physical activity courses are offered for Pass/No Pass grading only.
  • Any course change after registration must be made through the Department of Athletics and Physical Education office.
  • Physical activity courses offered by the athletics and physical education department are open to all genders unless otherwise noted.

Credit Hours and Repeatability

  • Physical activity courses are offered as full-semester courses bearing one credit (1.0), or as module courses bearing one-half credit (0.5).
  • Students are permitted to receive a maximum of two credit hours in any one activity course.
    • Since most activity courses are 0.5 credit, most courses can be taken a total of four times.
    • Should students wish to receive more than two credits in a particular course, they must petition the Physical Education Curriculum Committee with a specific request/justification.
    • Varsity athletic credit is exempt from the two-credit limit.

Curriculum

It is the purpose of the activity program to contribute to the liberal education of students through experiences in movement and to encourage their physical and mental wellbeing. A broad program of aquatics, yoga, sports, and body integrating experiences is offered to help the students develop skills, attitudes, and other resources that will enable them to lead an active and productive life.

Members of the department welcome consultation with students regarding the selection of experiences that will best meet their needs and interests.
