The integrated arts major—the fifth year of the BA/BFA dual degree program—provides the intensive training integral to a BFA and complements the holistic liberal arts context of the BA portion of the BA/BFA degree program. It enables, for example, painters to be better painters by also studying animation and photography, or filmmakers to be better filmmakers by also studying drawing and creative writing. Experiential learning is central to the major, with a non-course experiential learning requirement in the summer between the fourth and fifth year and an experiential learning course in the fall and spring of the fifth year.
Once students are cleared to advance to the fifth year at Park Arts, the Office of the Registrar will add the integrated arts major to students’ records. The first cohort of students will be in 2027.
Students who successfully complete the integrated arts major will:
develop capacity to work across a variety of artistic media and practices;
learn how to engage diverse publics through the production and presentation of art works;
gain the professional experience of working as an artist in a broader urban community;
acquire strategies for collaboration and interdisciplinary artistic research;
demonstrate proficiency at all stages of a major artistic project from initial conceptualization to iterations and critique to public presentation; and
learn to participate thoughtfully, generatively, and generously in critiques of peer and faculty work.
Application Process
Students who did not apply to the BA/BFA degree program as entering first-year students have the opportunity to apply to add the BFA degree program-and thereby the integrated arts major-through the end of their sophomore spring semester. Exceptions will be made for students seeking to apply later who are on track to complete the BA/BFA program in a timely fashion to the extent that there is available space.
