Transfer of Credit Toward the Minor
The creative writing department will accept up to the equivalent of one full course of transfer credit to count toward the creative writing minor requirements. Two types of approval are needed. (1) Approval from the Office of the Registrar that the transfer course meets Oberlin’s transfer-of-credit eligibility standards and (2) approval from the department/program chair that the course(s) may count to the minor. Current students taking post-matriculation credit must secure this approval before registering for course(s). Students who enter Oberlin as transfer students will have their pre-matriculation credit evaluated by the Office of the Registrar for elective credit, and they can later seek approval from the department/program for applying coursework to minor requirements. Literary Reading and Analysis Courses
Return to the summary of requirements. Students should consult with their advisors when selecting literary reading and analysis courses. Growing as a writer depends upon growing as a reader. The literary reading and analysis requirement asks students to deepen their knowledge of the traditions and current practices that shape the genres in which they write; in the most general sense, courses that count toward the literary reading and analysis requirement are those whose concern is the literary study of works of literature. The requirement may be met by courses in literature, narrative, or poetics (generally at the 200-level and above) offered by the departments of Africana studies, cinema and media, comparative literature, English, theater, and language departments such as French and Italian and East Asian studies. Literary reading and analysis credit may, in some cases, be considered for courses outside of these departments but within the arts and humanities (ARHU) division of the college. All such considerations and decisions are at the discretion of the department chair or a designated faculty member. The department maintains a form which may be filled out to nominate a course for consideration as a literary reading and analysis course. Filling out the form does not guarantee that a course will count for literary reading and analysis credit. Declaring the Minor
Declaration of the creative writing minor is only granted once the student has applied and gained admission to the required 300-level creative writing workshop course. This is because the classes are small, priority is given to creative writing majors, and the department cannot guarantee seats for aspiring minors. Once students have registered for the 300-level course, they may submit the interdivisional or Arts and Sciences minor declaration/change form to the creative writing department chair for approval and signature. Applications to the next semester’s 300-level courses are due at noon on the Tuesday after that semester’s break, which is the deadline for all other departmental applications. The department recommends completing the required minor elective course (generally a CRWR 100- or 200-level course) and the required literary reading and analysis course before applying for the 300-level course. |
