Jazz Composition Major

The major consists of a minimum of 160 credits, a private study committee examination requirement, and a performance requirement.
Note: No credit with a grade lower than D may be counted toward the requirements of the major.

Summary of Requirements

- Jazz composition students have an instrumental/vocal focus as determined at the time of admission to the Conservatory. Jazz composition students will be expected to take two credits of secondary lesson courses in their focus area during each semester of their first two years in the major.
- Jazz composition students must audition for jazz ensembles at the start of each academic year. The jazz studies faculty will place students into large jazz ensembles.
- JAZZ 290 and JAZZ 291 count as eight of the 32 credits of liberal arts elective courses required for the Bachelor of Music degree.
Jazz Forum
Student-formed small ensembles perform each week for one another and offer critical, constructive feedback. The events are open to the public, and attendance is required of all jazz composition and jazz performance majors. Detailed Major Requirements
