Performance Major: Bassoon Concentration


The performance major: bassoon concentration consists of a minimum of 160 credits, a private study committee examination requirement, and a performance requirement.

Note: No credit with a grade lower than D may be counted toward the requirements of the concentration.

Note(s) on Requirements


  • Students are required to register for APST 280  in the first semester of their first year.
  • Students must register for a large ensemble elective course every semester in residence as assigned. Double-degree students must complete eight semesters. Transfer students are expected to register every semester on campus.
  • Students must pass both major committee examinations before scheduling their junior recital.
  • The required junior recital may be waived at the discretion of the principal private study teacher. If a junior recital is not performed, two appearances on divisional recitals are required prior to the senior recital.
  • APST 110  and APST 111  must be completed before the senior recital may be scheduled.

Private Study Committee Examination Requirement

First Major Committee Examination

Note: Students must pass both major committees before scheduling their junior recital.

  • Administered in the second semester of the first year.
  • Consists of a performance of a prepared solo, with or without piano accompaniment, evaluated by the woodwind faculty. The principal private study teacher guides the student’s choice of repertoire and preparation. Memorization is optional.
  • Grading is pass/no pass, with both numerical and written components to provide detailed feedback.
  • If a student does not pass a committee, the student may repeat the committee at the beginning of the following semester. The student cannot continue their studies in the concentration if they do not pass the second attempt.
Second Major Committee Examination
