APST 112 - Keyboard Accompanying (Vocal) Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour Following a brief placement audition, pianists are paired with singers according to the needs of the voice department. Students may also make arrangements to accompany specific singers, subject to accompanying faculty’s approval. Accompanying projects are supervised by the voice teacher and accompanying faculty. Five hours of weekly contact time are expected, including rehearsals, voice lessons, coachings with accompanying faculty, but not practice time. Instructor: P. APST 113 - Keyboard Accomp (Instrumental) Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour Assignments will be made from repertoire requests submitted by the applied faculty. Students are encouraged to make arrangements to accompany specific instrumentalists, subject to accompanying faculty?s approval. Accompanying projects will be supervised by the instrumental teacher and accompanying faculty. Five hours of weekly contact time are expected, including weekly master classes with accompanying faculty, rehearsals, lessons, coachings, but not individual practice time. Instructor: J. APST 120A; 120B - Time Travel for Pianists Semester Offered: First and Second Semester; First Module & Second Module Credits (Range): 1 Attribute: CNDP A one-module course. Historical keyboard instruments (various fortepianos and clavichords) are used as experimental tools for learning about style. Students will be expected to bring pieces they are studying or have studied (Bach through Liszt) to a weekly meeting with the instructor, and will be expected to make a presentation in class, at the end of the module. May be repeated for credit with permission of the instructor.

APST 130 - Viola Class Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A one-semester course required of all students whose principal applied study is violin. The course is designed to familiarize the student with viola technique and clef reading. Instructor: K. Ritscher Prerequisites & Notes This course may be waived by examination.

APST 140 - Internalizing Rhythms Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A workshop for instrumentalists and vocalists that focuses on the student’s ability to internalize and comprehend a range of rhythms that originate in multiple cultures. The teaching emphasizes speaking rhythm and then performing the lessons on the frame drum. The course materials are based upon a contemporary application of old-world teaching methods from North Africa, the Mid-east, and South India. The rhythms are poly-rhythmical an cyclical in nature. The playing techniques implemented are basic hand and finger techniques adapted from South Indian drumming and can be applied to a variety of percussion instruments. Instructor: J. APST 141 - Internalizing Rhythms II Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour Continues work on the concepts of levels of rhythms and the ways to view them. The effect of these lessons is meant to give the student a greater sense of the mystical power of something simply done in a clear profound fashion. The class will explore how the split finger drum technique can be applied to other drums and percussion instruments, and watch and hear audio examples of a variety of indigenous musicians from around the world and discuss the aspects that transcend style on a global music basis. Applying the concepts shared in class, students will start to create some pieces using the frame drum and a family of other percussion instruments that the instructor will provide. Class assignments will include original short basic compositions or adaptations of known songs that show a level of mastery of the concepts presented in class. Instructor: J. APST 204 - Interpretation of Art Song Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour Individual coaching sessions for singer/accompanist duos on musical style, interpretation, ensemble, languages, and presentation. Students who begin coaching first semester for a second semester recital will receive a deferred grade pending completion of the recital. Piano majors may substitute this course for one of the required keyboard accompanying credits. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 8. Prerequisites and Notes Note: Accompanists may repeat the course for credit once. Open to seniors and artist diploma candidates preparing degree recitals, and to their accompanists. Instructor: P. APST 208 - Guided Piano Pedagogy Proj Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour An independent study course for prospective and declared piano pedagogy minors. Students must propose and complete a significant written research project in the field of piano pedagogy and present their work in a public lecture-demonstration. Topics may be drawn from the piano teaching literature, current pedagogical trends, or historical pedagogy. Instructor: S. Pierce Prerequisites & Notes Open to declared piano pedagogy minors only.

APST 209 - Guided Teaching Observation Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A student will observe a series of individual and group lessons to become familiar with a variety of teaching styles and pedagogical approaches. Instructor: S. Pierce Prerequisites & Notes Requirements will include a portfolio of observation reports and regular consultation with the instructor.

APST 210 - Intermediate Piano Pedagogy Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours General introduction for pianists to pedagogical principles, teaching repertoire, and learning materials and technology, with focus on teaching intermediate level students. Students will engage in lecture-discussions, critically respond to assigned readings, examine current teaching materials, and contribute regularly to a web-based discussion group. Instructor: S. APST 211 - Elementary Piano Pedagogy Next Offered: [2009 - 2010] Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours A one-semester introduction to the teaching of beginning piano and musicianship skills to young students in group and private settings. The course covers philosophical and developmental issues; as well as a thorough review of methods, materials, resources, and techniques for teaching at the elementary level. APST 221 - Sacred Music Skills Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours First semester of a one-year course having an emphasis on skills necessary to become a successful church/synagogue musician. Units include historical and modern church music history, the role of the organist in the modern synagogue, hymnology, liturgy and worship styles, creative hymn playing, chant, accompanying, sight-reading, transposition, basic skills in improvisation, conducting from the console, rehearsal techniques, basic sacred choral repertoire, and church music administration. APST 230 - The Teaching of Singing Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 3 Hours The first part of the course is designed as an introduction to aspects of physiology, acoustics, and phonetics of the singing instrument, relating them directly to comparative vocal techniques and to the materials of teaching. It presents practical application of systematic vocal technique to the teaching of singing. The Otto B. Schoepfle Vocal Arts Center will be heavily relied upon as a resource for the course. APST 234 - Flute Pedagogy Next Offered: TBD Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A one-semester course examining the various teaching techniques and methods for beginning through college level flutists. The course will include lectures and teaching observed by the class to be followed by discussion sessions. Participants will also teach supervised private lessons on a pay basis. APST 235 - Percussion Instruments Next Offered: TBD Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour Designed to give students knowledge of the pedagogy of percussion instruments, materials and method books, and methods for building percussion sections of school ensembles. All percussion instruments are demonstrated and basic techniques taught, each student being required to develop basic playing ability. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 12. APST 236 - Wrkshp: Writing for Percussion Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours A workshop for composition majors only, concentrating on the problems of writing for percussion instruments and including studies of the characteristics and performance problems of all percussion instruments, notational systems, set-up problems, and orchestrational possibilities. APST 240 - Continuo Realization at the Keyboard Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours A course in the technique and practice of realizing continuo parts in the music of the Baroque. APST 241 - Introduction to Historical Keyboard Instruments for Pianists Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours A team-taught, hands-on introduction to the fortepiano, harpsichord, and organ. Three weeks of small-group meetings will be devoted to each of the instruments, and in the final portion of the semester each student will receive individual instruction on one of them. Students wil be expected to prepare excerpts from a variety of repertory. Related readings will also be asigned. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 4 per section. Instructor: D. APST 242 - Baroque Violin for Violinists Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A one-semester course designed to acquaint violinists with the technique, style, and literature of the violin before 1750. APST 260 - Conducting I: Techniques of Conducting Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours Designed for conservatory students in any major, a course stressing baton technique and score preparation. The development of fundamental conducting approaches for expressive articulations and specific conducting problems. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 40. Instructor: J. APST 280 - Prima Vista Group Reading Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A discovery workshop for woodwind and horn students to develop reading ability and ensemble flexibility. APST 282 - Viola Orch Repertoire Class Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A continuing study of those excerpts often required for orchestral auditions. APST 284 - Orchestra Repertoire Violin Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour Repertoire will be chosen from works most frequently encountered at orchestral auditions. Emphasis will be on bowing styles and general techniques used in orchestral playing at the professional level. An attempt will be made to coordinate the repertoire with that of the Oberlin orchestras. Two simulated orchestral auditions will be required. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 10. APST 285 - Orchestra Rep for Dble Bass Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour Concentrated study and preparation of orchestral literature requested at professional orchestra auditions. Repertoire scheduled to be performed by the Oberlin orchestras may be incorporated into the coursework. APST 310 - Intermed Piano Pedag Practicum Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 1 to 2 Hours An opportunity for students who have completed Intermediate Piano Pedagogy (APST 210) to further develop their teaching skills. Students will teach four pupils weekly as part of the Supervised Teaching Program. Required portfolios will include development of syllabi for individual students, self-critiques of video-taped lessons, written lesson reports, and assessments of student progress. APST 311 - Elementary Piano Pedag Practic Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 1 to 2 Hours An opportunity for students who have completed Elementary Piano Pedagogy (APST 211) to further develop their teaching skills. Students will observe and teach segments of group lessons for children in Piano Lab program. In addition, students will teach weekly individual lessons to two children on a pay basis. Required portfolios will include observation reports, lesson plans and assessments, and self-critiques of video-taped teaching. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 5. Instructor: S. APST 312 - Class Piano Pedagogy Practicum Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours An opportunity for students to gain experience in teaching college-level group piano. Students will observe all class sessions of a basic-level piano class, prepare and teach a series of class segments, and become familiar with a variety of teaching methods, materials, and technologies. Required portfolios will include observation reports, text evaluations, lesson plans and assessments, and self-critiques of video-taped teaching. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 5. APST 330 - Cello Orchestral Repertoire Class Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour A one-semester course designed to prepare junior and senior cello students for professional orchestral auditions. APST 340 - Continuo Accompanying Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour Coaching sessions for continuo players, individually and within ensembles. Students must be currently engaged in preparation of continuo parts for accompaniment of junior, senior, artist diploma, or master?s recitals or other required performances. Development of all elements of the conductor?s craft: solfege, harmonic and formal analysis, rhythmic security, aural imagery, knowledge of instruments and voices, technique/vocabulary of gesture, group management and psychology, rehearsal techniques, programming. APST 750 - Indonesion Gong Ensemble (gamelan and talempong) Next Offered: 2011 - 2012 Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour In this course you will learn to play gong ensembles from Indonesia, including the classical practice of Central Javanese gamelan (a percussion-based ensemble featuring gongs and keyed instruments); and village-style talempong from West Sumatra that features interlocking drums and kettle gongs.
By the end of the clas students will have gained a basic understanding of how the music is constructted, along with cultural matters specific to its performance. Throughtout th semester students will be encouraged to take turns on all the different instruments but workd towards ensemble rather than individual expression for a final performance.

APST 760 - Old Time Ensemble Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 This course focuses on a set of American folk traditions known collectively as “Old Time” music. Throughout the semester, we’ll become familiar with multiple styles of vocal and string band repertoire, learning by ear and emphasizing ensemble playing/singing.
No previous experience is necessary. You may choose to concentrate on either vocal or instrumental performance, or to combine both. APST 770 - Balkan Ensemble Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 This ensemble will introduce students to a variety of traditional musical styles from Southeast European countries (such as Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, and Serbia) and to their historical and societal contexts. Through rehearsing the music of several ethnic groups, students will learn different characteristic approaches to ornamentation, phrasing, and accompaniment on their own instruments and voices and will also have the opportunity to learn to perform on traditional Balkan instruments. CNST 130 - Phys Wellnss Musician’s Life Semester Offered: First and Second Semester Credits (Range): 1 Hour The musician’s body and its state of physical health has a strong influence on his or her ability to play or sing. This course will emphasize physical restructuring, as well as practical methods for maintaining balanced physical health. Students will develop an increased understanding of the body’s physical and muscular structures and its movement principles. Their everyday postural habits will be evaluated and corrective patterns explored. This is a practical course, with daily lab components which will allow the information to be integrated into their bodies, setting the foundation for physical health, and decreasing the possibility of injuries. MHST 353 - Studies in Opera: Opera in the U.S. since 1950 Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 3 hours A study of operas composed and produced on American stages since 1950, including tonal, modern, postmodern, minimalist, and experimental works; also, of American institutions producing operas and their audiences. MHST 902 - Re-envisioning the Past Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 6 Hours Attribute: CNDP, DDHU, WR In the first century of British industrialization, waves of nostalgia for “the medieval” swept through the arts. The fashion for all things ruined, “romantic,” “gothic,” and Arthurian affected music, painting, architecture, poetry, design, scholarship, even bookmaking. This interdisciplinary course will explore the ways in which 19th-century British people imagined and sought to “revive” the pre-modern past and in doing so re-imagined the relations between reason and passion, nature and society, the individual and the imagination. MHST 903 - The London Music Scene Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 6 Hours Attribute: 6 CNDP, DDHU In this course, we will use the music presented throughout London over the course of the semester to consider what it means to be British and a Londoner in the early 21st century. Using classical, popular, and experimental music, we will investigate whether the variety of music available in London is a positive sign of a culture successfully moving beyond its own colonial past, or if this variety is merely a continuation of connoisseur cultural consumption.
