ARTH 223 - Politics and Protest: Modern Chinese ArtFC ARHU CD 4 credits An examination of artistic trends from the fall of dynastic China in 1911 to the 1990s, this course will highlight artists’ attempts to ‘modernize’ against the backdrop of Civil War, the rise of the Communist Party, and following the death of Mao. Topics will include: early art societies, academies and curriculum, woodcuts, Socialist Realist painting, propaganda posters, and such post-Mao movements as Scar art, the Stars, and ‘90s experimental art. Recommended Preparation: one 100-level course in art history or East Asian studies.
