HIST 389 - Archaeologies of China

FC SSCI CD
4 credits
Tens of thousands of recent archaeological discoveries promise historians an opportunity not only to more fully understand China’s early history, but also to query long held assumptions about China’s supposedly ‘static’ past. This upper-level seminar invites students to participate in these projects by asking (a) What are the origins of China and why do they matter?; (b) How do we (re)write history using newly discovered material and manuscript sources?; and (c) What is the relation between these sources and classic texts? Emphasis will be placed on first-hand access to material objects. No language expertise required, but original language sources will be available. Field trip(s) required.
