HIST 122 - Middle East and North African History from 1800 to the Present
FCSSCICD4 credits This introductory course follows the intellectual, political, economic, and social transformations in the MENA region from 1800 to the present. It examines themes including the relation between the British and French colonizers and their colonized societies, the formation of modern ‘nation-states,’ national identities and wars of liberation, Arab nationalism and socialism, ethnic and sectarian conflicts, the Arab Israeli conflict, Gulf politics and economy, feminist thought and activism, and the emergence of political Islam.
