POLT 244 - Politics of Transitional Justice

How do states and societies deal with the legacies of large-scale human rights violations? Transitional justice refers to the judicial and non-judicial measures used to redress these violations, including international criminal tribunals, truth commissions, reparations, and the construction of collective memory. Through cases drawn primarily from Latin America, we explore the theoretical and practical dilemmas transitional justice presents for societies; we also explore how international norms and domestic practices have interacted to shape contemporary debates over principles such as universal jurisdiction and the responsibility to protect. Recommended Preparation: POLT 120.
