RELG 241 - Literature and Ethics: British Novels

HC ARHU
2 credits
What does it mean to lead an ethical life? Novelists, like religious ethicists, explore this question and related topics such as moral development, authenticity, obligations to others, and justice. While religious ethicists seek to provide conceptual clarity in their treatment of these topics related to the ethical life, novelists bring their explorations to life in the worlds of their novels. In this one module course we will study religious ethical concepts and then the lived complexity presented in novels by Charles Dickens, including Bleak House, in which Dickens explores issues such as obligations to others and justice.

This course is appropriate for new students.
