GEOS 201 - Mineralogy & Optical CrystallographyFC NSMA QFR 4 credits Most of our planet is made of minerals, the physical properties of which play important roles in geologic processes from the plate-tectonic to the nano-scales. This course examines the relationships between the structure, chemistry, physical, and optical properties of minerals, their occurrence, and their relevance to the various branches of earth science. We will explore these concepts through laboratory exercises on crystal morphology and symmetry, optical mineralogy, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. Field trip(s) required.
Prerequisites: GEOS 120 (GEOL 120) or GEOS 124 (GEOL 124).
