HIST 209 - The City in Europe, 1100-1789FC SSCI 4 credits The medieval city–birthplace of political freedom or site of repression? Cultural haven or den of iniquity? This course explores the role of cities in the creation of Europe from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution; it draws on both sociological theories of urbanization and historical accounts of lived experience. We examine medieval origins, commercial capitalism and craft production, Renaissance urbanism and space, the civilizing process, political reform, and the nature of popular protest.
