SOCI 303 - Classical and Contemporary Sociological TheoryFC SSCI WADV 4 credits Classical sociology arose in response to social problems opened up by the advent of industrial society, from the disintegration of community and the decline of religion to class conflict and the rationalization of social life. The founding fathers of modern sociology–Durkheim, Marx, and Weber–formulated their theories in response to these problems and established three distinct traditions in sociological theory. This course explores continuities between classical and contemporary sociology in each of these three traditions. Priority given to sociology majors. Recommended Preparation: one “Introduction to Sociology” course.
