FCARHUCDWINT4 credits This course examines human-animal relations and symbolism in French literature, art, and film. Starting with werewolves and other hybrid creatures in medieval literature, and continuing with the La Fontaine’s Fables and Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, this course traces the history of the human-animal border through the 19th century, in Darwin and a novel by Emile Zola. The course concludes with an examination of the animal in contemporary philosophy and cinema. Taught in French.
