CLAS 950 - Magic, Witchcraft, and Religion from Stonehenge to Harry Potter

FC ARHU
4 credits
This course traces the history of magic and witchcraft in the United Kingdom, with a special focus on the ways magic has been juxtaposed with established religion. The course investigates how outsider approaches to the divine (wise women, Hermetics, and Spiritualists) provided meaning to their adherents, while simultaneously drawing the ire of the state and church. London played an important role in historical developments related to magic and religion. Through readings, discussion, site visits, and materials from the British Museum and elsewhere, the course will move through six major periods, from Stonehenge and the Druids to Tolkein and Harry Potter. Taught in London. Prior application and acceptance to the Oberlin-in-London Program required.
