EAST 307 - Occupied Japan, 1945-1952FC SSCI CD WADV 4 credits This course examines the transition from war to peace following Japan’s cataclysmic defeat in World War II. The emphasis is on the rebuilding of political institutions and the transformation of society processes that took place under the watchful eye of the Allied Occupation which lasted for seven years. While considering the many ruptures with the past occasioned by Emperor Hirohito’s announcement of surrender on August 15, 1945, the course will also examine the political, social, economic, and cultural continuities that spanned the wartime/postwar divide.
Prerequisites: EAST 132 or HIST 160. This course is cross-listed with HIST-307
