HISP 417 - Saints, Sinners and Other Cursed WomenFC ARHU CD 4 credits Between the 16th and 17th centuries, Early Modern Spain and the Spanish Americas increased the regulatory measures that defined women’s behavior regarding virtue and deviance. This seminar studies the tensions between these categories, and the extent to which they determined the ways women in both sides of the Atlantic negotiated, manipulated and circumvented mechanisms of control. Taught in Spanish. Our inquiry will benefit from discussions with students in FREN 455 and visits to the Allen Art Museum.
Prerequisites: HISP 304.
