HISP 309 - Concoctions, Poisons, and Spells: Making Life Livable in Early Modern SpainFC ARHU CD 4 credits From Kings to peasants, most people in early modern Spain resorted to unorthodox cures to solve spiritual, physical, and economic hardships whenever religious, medical, and legal means failed. Civil and inquisitorial courts disapproved and attempted to curb these practices. This course takes concoctions, poisons, and spells as a point of departure to study the orthodox and unorthodox resources, knowledges, and experiences that made life livable in early modern Spain and the institutions that sought to police and regulate it. Taught in Spanish.
This course is appropriate for new students based on placement exam.
