HISP 461 - Wild Laboratories: Political Experiments in 19th Century Latin AmericaFC ARHU CD WADV 4 credits 19th-century Latin America was a politico-cultural laboratory. Within the future republics, myriad political experiments sought to put into practice many of the Enlightenment’s hypotheses. Despite their outcomes, these experiments attest to the audacity of thought in an age characterized by equal measures of political innovation and political failure. A variety of materials-from speeches and legislation to historiography and essays-will inform our exploration of the discourses that constituted and continue to determine the Latin American republics. Taught in Spanish.
Prerequisites: two 300-level courses taught in Spanish.
