MUTH 319 - Analyzing Renaissance MusicFC CNDP 4 credits In this course, we will gain familiarity with analytical techniques suitable for 16th- and early 17th-century music. We will learn to interpret 16th-century notation (including mensural notation and tablature); study 16th-century music theory; and explore pedagogical and analytical tools like solmization, counterpoint, mode, chromaticism, text setting, and rhetoric. We will discuss approaches to historical performance practice and historically-informed music analysis. Coursework will include performing from period sources, creation of a modern edition, and analysis of compositions by composers like Josquin des Prez, Orlando di Lasso, William Byrd, Claudio Monteverdi, and Francesca Caccini.
Prerequisites: two courses in MUTH 250-299.
