ETHN 190 - Black Music in the Hour of ChaosFC CNDP 4 credits This course focuses on the production, reception, and functions of contemporary Black music. Both the Black Lives Matter movement and dramatic domestic political change serve as context for exploration. Students will use an ethnomusicological approach to explore pertinent themes including: the emergence of new Black music genres and the identities they signify; how they public performance of Black music exists within the context of gentrification and protest; and the role of Black music as affirmation/resistance/catharsis. Throughout the semester students will directly engage the work of musicians, artists, and scholars. The course will culminate with a public presentation of students’ findings.
Prerequisites: ESOL 130 (for students in ESOL sequence).
