MHST 331 - Johann Sebastian BachFC CNDP, DDHU 4 credits A study of Bach’s life and selected works. The course addresses the “new image” of a familiar master which has emerged from the startling research of post-1950 scholars. Through a close study of the cantatas and works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, St. John Passion, and Musical Offering, the class seeks to illumine Bach’s position in various musical traditions, to explore his response to cultural environment, and to describe analytically his expressive vocabulary.
Prerequisites: ESOL 130 (for students in ESOL sequence).
