GEOS 335 - Interdisciplinary Geographic Information Systems and CartographyFC NSMA QFR 4 credits Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are used to analyze spatial data, tackling real-world problems through the lens of mapping places and spaces. The class will use GIS software and hands-on activities to explore interdisciplinary topics such as social injustices in urban planning and development, environmental hazards and disasters, and problems related to climate change and renewable energy. Delving into art and design as it applies to map-making, students will draw on cartographic and data visualization principles to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences. This course is designed to be accessible to students from a variety of academic backgrounds (humanities, arts, natural and social sciences, etc.) and experience levels. No prior experience with GIS, geosciences or computer science is needed.
