MUTH 251 - Cycles

FC CNDP
4 credits
This course will use as its springboard collections of music that cycle through all of the major and minor keys. Spanning from the 18th century to modern day, the repertoire to be studied includes compositions by J.S. Bach, Frederich Chopin, Charles-Valentin Alkan, Alexander Scriabin, Dmitri Shostakovich, Paul Hindemith, Nikolai Kapustin, and Lera Auerbach. We will explore and learn about: form and harmony in preludes, fugues, and etudes; various ways composers interpret ‘key’ and ‘tonality’; methods of delineating large-scale structure; and the fusion of jazz and classical forms. Coursework will include several short assignments as well as two substantial projects.

Prerequisites: MUTH 132 and ESOL 120 (for students in ESOL sequence).
