HIST 219 - The American Civil War

This course is designed to foster a deeper understanding of the long Civil War era. In this course students will examine the major social, cultural, religious, economic, and political developments during the American Civil War era from the 1850s to the 1870s. Students will consider diverse perspectives and important questions like: Why was the Confederacy created, and by whom? How did issues of legitimacy and law impact the antebellum period, the war, and its aftermath? Who had the greatest influence on memories of the war? And how does American Civil War history help us understand socio-political movements in the present?
