ENVS 217 - Qualitative Methods for Environmental StudiesFC SSCI CD 4 credits This course will provide a foundational training in the core qualitative research methods used in the environmental social sciences and humanities. Methods covered in this course include participant-observation and interviewing along with environmentally-focused methods including collaborative mapping and supply chain tracing. We will also examine some unique subfields, like soundscape ecology, that have their own specialized methods and approaches. This course will explore Indigenous and non-Western approaches in a way that will call upon students to take a critical lens on received knowledge on what constitutes “the environment.” Students will have an opportunity to use these techniques through research exercises that address nonhumans in the local environment. As this course’s focus is on qualitative methods, we will not cover quantitative methods.
