FYSP 048 - Cultured Human Cells in Research and Medicine: A Scientific and Philosophical PerspectiveFC NSMA WINT 4 credits From the advent and industrialization of immortalized human cells, to recent breakthroughs in regenerative medicine using stem cells, this seminar will explore the advancements and ethics of using human cells in research and medicine. Students will discuss the history of tissue culture in research, the contributions of cell culture technologies to the advancement of science and therapeutics, and the philosophical questions surrounding this topic. This course will sample non-technical books on science and philosophy, primary science literature, and popular science articles. Students will engage in group discussions, give in-class presentations, and complete self-reflective writing assignments.
