FREN 347 - Décolonisation linguistique et traduction

FC ARHU CD
4 credits
After their countries gained independence in the 1960s, African authors were faced with a crucial choice to make, that of the language in which their literature should be written. While some argued for the use of indigenous languages, many authors made the choice to write in the colonial language. But how does the “empire write back” using the colonizer’s own language? Looking at literary production from West Africa, this course will examine “la littérature des indépendances” and will pay close attention to ways in which some authors chose a process of linguistic decolonization by using and subverting the colonial language. This course will use translation as a means to investigate the issue of linguistic decolonization. Taught in French.

Prerequisites: FREN 301 or FREN 309 or FREN 321.
This course is appropriate for new students based on placement exam.
