CINE 258 - Global Black MediaFC ARHU CD 4 credits In this course, we will study how technologies have mediated Blackness globally. Central to this course will be an interrogation of the role that race has played in the development of media technologies (from celluloid film stock to facial recognition software and AI) and the place of race in media theory. We will also explore the ways in which pan-African global Black solidarity has been forged through the distribution of Black popular culture including cinema, music, and digital practices. We will identify aesthetic continuities across the diaspora, while thinking critically about the mediatic space of the Atlantic.
This course is appropriate for new students.
