ARTH 285 - Imagining Ancient Rome in Early Modern ArtFC ARHU WINT 4 credits Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, artists and scholars in Rome were eager to unearth evidence of Rome’s ancient history. Discoveries of ancient masterpieces shaped the work of artists like Raphael and Michelangelo, and later Annibale Carracci, Nicolas Poussin, and Bernini. In this seminar, students will learn how discoveries of ancient Roman artifacts shaped artistic production in early modern Europe. Students will also study the interdisciplinary methods employed by antiquarians and consider how modern art historical methodologies can be traced to early antiquarian practices. The class will include visits to the Allen Memorial Art Museum and Clarence Ward Art Library.
Prerequisites: one 100-level course in ARTH.
