RELG 277 - Paradise and Hellfire: A View from the Quran

From the perspective of orthodox Muslims, God addresses all of humanity through the Quran, and a central focus of this address focuses on elaborate descriptions of the afterlife and human eternality. The contours of paradise and hellfire and the actions that will lead a soul to one or the other place form a substantial part of the conceptual, moral and institutional subjects addressed in the Quran. Related subjects of resurrection and judgment day also receive attention. This course explores the Quran’s rich and multi-faceted view of the afterlife, and the actions required of humans in this life to reach paradise.
