FCARHUCD4 credits This course provides an overview of Islamic mystical and Sufi approaches to moral life through the poetic lens of Jalal al-Din Rumi the renowned Sufi poet of thirteenth century. Because of its story-based and accessible metaphoric language, Rumi’s major work Masnavi in English translation has gained unprecedented global attention and readership in recent decades. Using Masnavi in English translation as the main course reading, this seminar explores significant moral and mystical topics that pertain to our contemporary human conditions, anxieties, paradoxes and life patterns. The course will also explore experiential, artistic, musical and other creative dimensions of Sufi-oriented perspectives.
